The Cornish city of Truro is, in fact, the only city in the county and is consequently the main centre for Cornwall's retail and leisure as well as its administrative heart.
Originally gaining prominence as an important local port with links to the mining industry in the region, the city boasts many beautiful historic monuments and buildings, the best known and most striking of which being its stunning cathedral which dominates the skyline.
Among Truro's charming cobbled streets and fine Georgian architecture are many excellent specialist shops and several high quality markets that make the city a popular place for tourists looking for a taste of the traditional Cornwall.
During the summer months the city takes part in the Britain in Bloom competition, so many of the streets are bedecked with glorious floral displays and hanging baskets, adding to the already attractive streets.
